Re-Live some of the most exciting World Series Match-Ups with this Time
Travel Set.
Included in this set are the following famous match-ups:
1955 Brooklyn vs. New York
The 1955 World Series matched the Brooklyn franchise against the New York
franchise, with Brooklyn winning the Series in seven games to capture their
first championship in franchise history. It would be the only Series the
franchise would win in Brooklyn (the team relocated to Los Angeles after the
1957 season). The last time the Brooklyn franchise won a World Championship was
in 1900. The team was called the Brooklyn Superbas, the event was called the
Chronicle-Telegraph Cup, and the opponent was their fellow National League
franchise, Pittsburgh.
This was the fifth time in nine years that Brooklyn and New York met in World
Series, with the New York team having won in 1947, 1949, 1952 and 1953.
This Series also marked the end of a long period of invulnerability for the
New York squad in World Series. It was their first loss in a World Series since
1942 and only their second since 1926
1991 Atlanta vs. Minnesota
The 1991 World Series pitted the Minnesota against Atlanta.
Before 1991, no league champion had ever finished the previous season in last
place but both teams had finished the previous season in last place.
In their "World Series 100th Anniversary" countdown, ESPN selected the 1991
World Series as the "Greatest of All Time",with five of its games being decided
by a single run, four games decided in the final at-bat and three games going
into extra innings.
2011 St. Louis vs. Texas
The 2011 World Series was played between Texas and St. Louis, with the St.
Louis squad defeating the Texas team in seven games to win their 11th World
championship.
The Series was noted for its back-and-forth Game 6 in which St. Louis erased
two-run deficits in the bottom of both the 9th and 10th innings. In both
innings, Texas was one strike away from their first championship. The St. Louis
team won the game in the 11th inning on a walk-off home run by David Freese. The
Series was also well known for the blowout Game 3, in which Albert Pujols hit
three home runs, matching a World Series feat accomplished only by Reggie
Jackson and Babe Ruth.
