1924 Washington vs. New York

In the 1924 World Series, Washington beat New York in seven games. New York became the first team to play in four consecutive World Series, winning in 1921–1922 and losing in 1923–1924. Their long-time manager, John McGraw, made his ninth and final World Series appearance in 1924. This was the second extra-inning World Series-deciding game (1912) and the last until 1991.

Walter Johnson, after pitching his first 20-victory season (23) since 1919, was making his first World Series appearance, at the age of 36, while nearing the end of his career with Washington. He lost his two starts, but Washington battled back to force a Game 7, giving Johnson a chance to redeem himself when he came on in relief in that game. Johnson held on to get the win and give Washington its first and only championship. The seventh game is widely considered to be one of the most dramatic games in Series history.
 

1946 St. Louis vs. Boston

In the eighth inning of Game 7, with the score 3–3, St. Louis' Enos Slaughter opened the inning with a single but two batters failed to advance him. With two outs, Harry Walker walloped a hit over Johnny Pesky's head into left-center field. As Leon Culberson chased it down, Slaughter started his "mad dash". Pesky caught Culberson's throw, turned and—perhaps surprised to see Slaughter headed for the plate—supposedly hesitated just a split second before throwing home. Roy Partee had to take a few steps up the third base line to catch Pesky's toss, but Slaughter was safe without a play at the plate and Walker was credited with an RBI double. St. Louis won the game and the Series in seven games, giving them their sixth championship.

Boston superstar Ted Williams played the Series injured and was largely ineffective but refused to use his injury as an excuse.

As the first World Series to be played after wartime travel restrictions had been lifted, it returned from the 3-4 format to the 2–3–2 format for home teams, which has been used ever since. It also saw the return of many prominent players from military service.

2016 Cleveland vs. Chicago

Chicago defeated Cleveland 4 games to 3 to win their first World Series in 108 years. Game 7, an 8–7 victory in extra innings, which marked the fifth time that a Game 7 had gone past nine innings, was the first to have a rain delay which occurred as the tenth inning was about to start. Chicago was the sixth team to come back from a three-games-to-one deficit to win a best-of-seven World Series.

Chicago, playing in their eleventh World Series and their first since 1945, won their third championship and first since 1908. It was Cleveland's sixth appearance in the World Series and their first since 1997, with their last Series win having come in 1948. The two teams entered their match-up as the two franchises with the longest World Series title droughts, a combined 176 years without a championship. .
